are not equal to those who live it.

The means by which we live have outdistanced
the ends for which we live. Our scientific
power has outrun our spiritual power.
We have guided missiles and misguided men.

They who withhold have nothing.

"Gore shows America way to healing"
By Fred DuVal
Dec. 18, 2000
.........
Our shared New Year's resolution might be that,
after this trauma, all Americans should come
together on common ground. They should resolve
to tackle, at last, the many challenges that have
been ignored amid Washington's partisan gridlock:
reforming education, providing drug coverage for
seniors, reforming our health-care system,
shoring up Social Security and Medicare, enacting
campaign finance reform and expanding economic
opportunity for every American.
That is the pledge George Bush made in his
thoughtful answer to Gore's concession speech.
We should accept it in good faith, with high
hopes and open minds. And we should meet his
pledge with our own.
In this charitable spirit - appropriately,
coming at the holiday season - every American,
and especially every devoted Democrat, should
follow Al Gore's lead and offer our support for
our new president-elect. The extraordinary
events of the past five weeks have mitigated
his legitimacy. Americans can choose to restore
it - and we should.
And, together - Democrats, Republicans and
Independents alike - we can conclude this
difficult chapter of our history by imbuing
renewed relevance to the familiar words,
"One nation, under God, indivisible."
